This collection is inspired by the mentality behind the Shou Sugi Ban house, and how important it is to escape the loud, crowded, and busy city life. Cement was used with the intentions of creating repeat patterns to fit their overall aesthetic. This artistic version of a “concrete jungle” shows the fact that a material many people do not see beautiful in every day life, can become engaging in a different way, compared to its intended purpose. This collection is meant to challenge the feeling of obligation people have to conform to traditional societal views.
Throughout the Shou Sugi Ban House, neutral colors are used to create a calming, and tranquil space. When creating, it was an intentional choice to continue with the raw palette.
Each pattern started by painting with cement on canvas and was then brought into Photoshop to create a repeat pattern.
